At Alexius Bodyworks, we employ a broad range of techniques and modalities to ensure you receive exactly the type of massage you're looking for.   Your massage is personalized for your needs and preferences - not a "one-size-fits-all" spa massage.

While James's primary modalities include Therapeutic, Deep Tissue, and Relaxation (or "Swedish") Massage, as your needs dictate, James will employ techniques from a broad spectrum of other bodywork styles to suit your needs:  Neuro-Muscular Technique, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Thai Massage, Lomi-Lomi, Circulatory Massage, Sports Massage, Foot Reflexology, Hydrotherapy,  Heated Stone Massage, Shiatsu, and many more.

Techniques & Modalities

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic Massage incorporates a variety of techniques in combination to address chronic tension and discomfort.  Elements of Deep Tissue Massage are combined with Muscle Energy Technique, Deep Muscle Therapy, and many other modalities to provide both specific and overall relief for chronic tension. James also uses Therapeutic Massage to address areas of specific injury, and to increase mobility.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage is designed to reach the deep portions of thick muscles, specifically the individual muscle fibers. Using deep muscle compression and friction along the grain of the muscle, its purpose is to unstick the fibers of the muscles and release both toxins and deeply held patterns of tension.

James is known among his clients and colleagues for the unusual softness and sensitivity of his touch.  Many clients who have never before been able to receive the benefits of deep tissue work because of sensitivity, tell us that James is able to work more deeply for them than they had previously thought possible.

Relaxation Massage (or "Swedish Massage")

Swedish massage is now known as "traditional" massage. In the 1820s a Swedish doctor, Dr. Per Henrik Ling, developed the first modern method of massage through his study of physiology, gymnastics, and the massage techniques borrowed from China, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Swedish massage includes long gliding strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, and shaking motions. It is effective for most ailments, because massaging the skin, the body's largest organ, sets up a chain reaction that produces a positive effect on all layers and systems of the body. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, and promotes health and wellbeing.

Like most modern Massage Practitioners, James uses Swedish Massage as the basis for his style.  The result is a flowing, gentle massage which serves as a foundation in which to incorporate elements of other techniques.

Heated Stone Massage

Developed in the Midwest for use in health spas, this technique uses stones that have been heated. These stones are positioned on the body and some are gently moved about with light pressure being exerted on the warm stones.

James finds this technique particularly effective for clients interested in a profound Relaxation Massage.  (Note: An additional fee applies for Heated Stone Massage.)

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy places strong demands on a woman's body and is a time for the body to be nurtured and pampered. This massage not only relieves the tensions and aches caused by the extra weight and shift in the center of gravity to the body, but it reduces swelling, soothes the nervous system, acts as a tonic, reduces fatigue, and enhances energy.

At Alexius Bodyworks, we always enjoy pampering the Mom-to-Be!  James has broad experience in pre-natal and post-partum massage, and is glad to consult with your Doula, Midwife or Obstetrician if you desire.
